Observatory Project for Pitt Community College

Aided in build and set-up of observatory systems for Pitt Community College. This is a computer run observatory that students and faculty from Pitt Community College and other institutions may use to track the night sky in conjunction with other observatories across the state.

NC Astronomers Meeting

Listened to presentations on space features, light pollution management plans, observatories, planetariums, and other initiatives and astronomy research projects from across the state. Additionally, interviewed Jocelyn Bell Burnell, the discoverer of pulsars, over lunch about the course of her career. Also, was able to inspect a series of different meteorites from around the world.

Digitalis Projector and Inflatable Planetarium Set-Up

Worked as an assistant planetarium projectionist for A Time for Science; Nature & Science Learning Center. Received training on Digitalis projector systems at Digitalis Headquarters in Bremerton, Washington. Traveled to community and school engagement events and set up the portable, inflatable planetarium as well as the planetarium projector. Would be there to assist during planetarium showings including night sky exploration, constellation events, and NASA videos. Took care of audience and made sure that audience remained safe, happy and
informed. Answered questions and helped the “Planetarium Master” inform our audiences of all ages.

NASA Shuttle Tire Hostess & Astronomy Night Volunteer at A Time for Science

As part of my volunteering for A Time for Science (ATFS); Science & Nature Center in Ayden, NC, would present during family STEM nights and astronomy days. For several years, this included informing visitors about space and the NASA shuttle program while they could check out the shuttle tire on loan from NASA. Additionally would lead guests through other space related activities such as space walks, and help them decorate their own “sun cookies”.

September 2012-April 2014

NASA HUNCH Shape Memory Alloy Peristaltic Pump Mechanism Project

Built a pump system to move fluids in microgravity inspired by the mechanisms of the human throat to move liquid. Made use Nitinol’s properties as a metal alloy that changes shape with temperature to control movement within the pump. Wrote safety and user manual. Tested its effectiveness on the reduced-gravity aircraft.

Summer 2013

Advanced Space Academy

Learned about the NASA space program as well as received hands-on experiences at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. This included building heat shields, launching rockets, simulating spacewalks with a mock satellite repair, acting as CapCom for mock ISS missions, experiencing the aerotrim, and scuba-diving to simulate the reduced gravity conditions of space in a pool that included an interactive satellite mock up.
